30 AugCan I have a domain (like www.domain.com) point to a folder on my web server, like (www.server.com/domain)?

A frequently-asked query:

I’d like to run another website on my web server. I want to use at least two unique domains. Basically, if someone enters the new domain, say domain.com, it’s really accessing a folder on my server (say server.com/domain/, but the url looks like the user is on the domain.com website. I don’t have web hosting software that manages multiple accounts like a professional reseller web host. Is there something I setup with the domain name company, and use like a "virtual host" or something like that?

29 AugI have a not-so-residential DSL setup at home and it almost works with my current router.?

A frequently-asked query:

NOTE: Skip to the bottom if you don’t want to read the sob story.

I have a 4 port 2Wire HG-2700 from Qwest. The reason I have kept it is that it has ‘DMZ-Plus’ mode. This basically assigns my public, static IP address to my web/game server, which I have hosted here at home. It works awesome with subdomains of my site domain, which is its top feature. I run multiple websites and game servers and being able to access any subdomain from my LAN is a must. This has seemed impossible without messing with the DNS of the router, which I want to avoid. Who wants to have to go into the router every time a subdomain changes or is added? I don’t know if I am being thick-headed or what, but it appears none of the purely residental routers supports this. That’s fine, my setup is not purely residential. I want a hands-free solution to multiple domains. Apparently 2Wire got it right.

The one downside to this router is it DOES NOT support QoS. At all. There are times when the games or website grinds to a halt if another computer on my LAN runs Windows Update, or someone downloads a game demo, whatever. QoS would be the perfect solution. For whatever reason, 2Wire requires that Qwest requests QoS support to be added into their firmware, which by the way can only be sent remotely from Qwest. Scratch a DIY solution. Qwest has kept posting that "it will be in the next firmware" but 2-3 firmwares later, it is still absent.

TLDR: I am looking for a DSL router with the following features:
- QoS capability
- 4+ ports
- DMZ-Plus behavior (access subdomains on a domain hosted on the same LAN without having to have a custom DNS server, or modify the DNS in the router)
- Hopefully costs less than 0

I am open to vising links, and am not afraid to buy used. If you couldn’t tell, I am more than familiar with stuff other than Solitaire and reading Hotmail.

28 AugI'm building a freelance website, where should I start out hosting it?

A frequently-asked query:

I would like to start a website for my freelance work, blah, blah, blah. I am a 16-year-old artist with multiple styles varying from pixel art to anime. I know that I am young, but please do not judge me by this.

I need to know the best place to host my website (for free to start out with) and still be taken seriously. I am very picky, and need to be able to design the layout by myself, as well as being able to use HTML. (And CSS is a big plus too.)
So far, freewebs.com sounds okay. If not, I was thinking of buying my own domain name and hosting it for free using 000Webhost.com. I’d rather not fool with technical things like this if I don’t have to, because I’ve done this before in my free time. For fun. *gags*
Also, tips for building a freelance site would be wonderful.
If you wish to see my current (informal) website, it’s http://freewebs.com/zomgrawr (PG-13)
